Momentary Push Button Switch
A momentary push button switch is a type of switch which is only activated while it is being pressed. As soon as the button is released the electrical circuit returns to its original state. The actuator is spring loaded so returns to its original position when the force is removed. The buttons on your keyboard are typical examples of momentary push button switches.
Momentary push button switch circuit diagrams
On a circuit diagram, a momentary push switch is represented with small triangles as shown below:

Momentary Switch Applications:
The momentary push switch is particularly suitable for applications which require power for a specific time. For example, nurse call systems can use this type of switch to activate an alarm which is pressed by a patient. The alarm goes off when the button is released so that it isn’t continually activated. These switches are also widely used in domestic and industrial applications:
- Control panels
- HVAC equipment
- Lighting products
- Domestic appliances
- Test equipment
- Security systems and alarms
